■楽曲解説

日本で吹奏楽をやっている以上、誰もが一回は演奏したことがあるであろう「アルフレッド・リード作品」。本曲もその一つとして作曲された1980年から40年以上経った今でも演奏されています。
本曲はイギリスの詩人であるスウィンバーンの詩、「カリドンのアタランタ」から着想を得て作曲されました。「若さあふれる快活さ」と「優しい恋の甘さ」を音楽として表現しようと試みられています。
カナダのオンタリオ州ウィンザーにあるジョン・L・フォースター・セカンダリースクール・コンサートバンドと、その指揮者ジェラルド・A・N・ブラウンから委嘱され、献呈されました。

■アレンジ内容(解説：梅田詠侍)

吹奏楽の神様とも呼ばれるアルフレッドリード氏による吹奏楽のための序曲をサックスカルテットアレンジしました。
リード氏の作品はなんといっても多声部で絡み合う音楽が特徴的ですが、その良さを可能な限り残しつつ、サックスでサウンドしやすいようにアレンジしています。

■Program Note

As long as you have been playing in a wind orchestra in Japan, you have probably played “Alfred Reed's works” at least once.
This piece is one such work that is still performed more than 40 years after its composition in 1980.
This piece was inspired by the poem “Atlanta in Calydon” by the English poet Swinburne. The music attempts to express “exuberant youthful gaiety” and “the sweetness of tender love".It was commissioned and dedicated by the John L. Forster Secondary School Symphonic Band of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and its director, Gerald A.N. Brown.

■Arrangement Details(explanation：Eiji Umeda)

This is a saxophone quartet arrangement of an overture for wind orchestra by Alfred Reed, who is also known as the god of wind orchestra.
Dr. Reed's works are characterized by music that intertwines with multiple voices, and I have arranged this piece so that it can be easily played on saxophone while retaining as much of its quality as possible.
